At SAC, we are going to encounter questions that relate to Theory of Knowledge (TOK). These are simply questions that force us to think about how we know something is true or false. In class we recently have been talking a lot about objectivity and subjectivity. After a certain point, we may begin to wonder: "Is it possible for anything to be objective?" Over the weekend I would like you to think about this question. It is difficult because everything we perceive ultimately is processed through our subjective minds; therefore, some people argue that it is impossible for anything to be objective. Other people argue that, despite our perception, there is certainly something objective out there, that is, outside of my mind. But then there is that "dream scenario" that is always there!!! This assignment is just for fun, so do not worry about your writing quality or the "depth" of your response. Just think about it and post whatever come to your mind. Have fun and challenge yourself!!!!

ReplyDeletewhat can be objective?
ReplyDeleteIf we can prove something without adding our emotions and feelings, if we just talk about facts and if we can feel with our five senses than it is objective. If something is objective we can prove it with math or science. I always liked science and math because everything is specific on math and science. In the exam it is very easy if the answer is 4 and if you write 5 then you write it wrong it is very easy but in classes like turkish, geography, social studies you can discuss the answer for hours because it is subjective and the truthness of the answer can change person to person I don't like that. If we say world is like a ball we can go to space and check it if it is correct or not but if we say world war 1 was bad for every countries benefits than we have to look and check the all countries status before the war and after the war because it is not objective, subjective....
İ think if people can prove and the answer is same for everyone, that it is objective. Besides if there are no emotions and thoughts, we call it objective as well. For example, As we know that Turkey is in Asia and also some part of it is in Europe. İt has prooved and if some says something different, it is wrong. I mean objective things just have one answer, no one can change it.
ReplyDeleteHmm...Objectivity...Before I started to my writing I went to living room and watched documentary which was about mathematic on TV for two minutes. After that I sat to the piano and played the symphony that I love most. Then I started comparing the subjectivity and objectivity by inferring from my symphony and documentary.Of course, the way I am telling you will detect that it will be subjective or objective but as you can say that the symphony writing will always be more subjective. In contrasts I think the both are subjective because like the way I am playing symphony came up from my mind and it can change person to person , the documentary too.All things you can think right now we named, invented, discovered and it is also came up from some person like you and me.And after we examined him/her idea we internalized as a community. You may think it is absolute nonsense but just hear this:Think a far away universe in that universe there will be an another living species like us and their community must be named the same thing with a different name, used with another thing and it mean a different thing to them or maybe there is nothing like we found in our world and it was just an hallucination that we created.Or the time is too late and I should't write or think in this hour.
ReplyDeleteCan something be completely objective at all?
ReplyDeleteLet's imagine that you are on a culture holiday. You go to a museum and the tour guide informs you about the history of that museum and doesn't give you any info on the decorations or the structure. He chooses to present that piece of information instead of another piece of information. It is objective because the information he gives is a fact. It is subjective because he chose the topic he liked and presented information to you on that. So this topic is very confusing. It is hard to decide if something is really objective or subjective.
yes, being objective is possible but it is hard exactly question is is it possible to be completely objective. anyone can't be completely objective because we have emotions we have ideas and it is impossible to erase or unactivate them.
ReplyDeleteI guess I can not say yes to that. Okay, we have general facts but how many of them are true? I mean How can I know about plants or animals or universe. People are saying the same thing: Science said so.Yes, but what if science is wrong? I mean how can I trust something that even has opposites inside. For example not too past, really close I heard this news today. It was about antibiotics. All doctors give antibiotics to every disease but we just learned that it causes to deaafness. If you Google this subject you can see lots of news like that. And that shows us even scientists can argue with science. Also we can argue with math. They are the most objective subjects but even we can argue with them. Also If we look at the past we can see lots of wrong general facts. Universe is a big mystery which can not solved. About our senses. I think senses can be wrong too. Fire… We can see fire, we can smell the burning air but we can not touch it. So we can not prove that it is not a hologram and about the table we can touch it or smell it or see it but again we can not know. Maybe it is a realistic hologram which came from the future or it can be from know. Scientists can invent realistic hologram. We can not know what is happening inside these labs.
ReplyDeleteI discuss it with my parents. They both said taht everything can't be objective because it can change for everyone. We can't be sure for that a situation is true. For example we can't be sure that god is real.Everyone says that the earths and planets are made by God.But scientists says its because of Big Bang explosion.Or we say that 2+2=4 but how can we know that? Why it is 4?We can't explain we just say because 2+2=4.Sometimes we can be objective but i think its really rare.Maybe the life that we live is just a dream and real life will start when we die.
ReplyDeleteObjective, hmmmmm…. This is an interesting word. It it is a word that not include opinions or feelings or emotions. And this might be confusing because you need to discard what your heart say. For example I know that the world is not moving, the sun is moving but it creates questions I our mind. Because we can see that the sun is not moving, it is standing still and by our vision we are not moving. So even I know the world is standing still I was like “well explain that, get rid of that question in my mind” So in the conclusion my message is knowing normal things is fine but when you go deeper you might find out something that is opposite to knowledge
ReplyDeleteDoes everyone knows what objective and subjective really means? I think no but let me explain it to you. Objective can't change person to person and it is always same for everyone .If we come to subjective it can chane person to person and there are feelings emotions and stuff in it.First of all shall we always believe what scientists say about us and about our world? I think no... For an example everyone reads news in internet or in newspaper it doesn't matter we just read and we accept. I think it is totally wrong we should do are own searching and experiments.I don't want to believe what I hear in first side. I f we need to look from my point of view I do it like that also I just believe it and carry on. Is it possible for anything to be objective? I definetly say no.Why? because after all I said it proves my answer.Maybe this is just a dream. Who knows?
ReplyDeleteI don't think that everything can be objective. We all have different feelings. Everyone's thoughts can't be same. If there is something we can prove to someone and they argue with us, that can be objective but we can't prove our thoughts are right to someone. They can argue, but there will be always someone that don't thinks like us. And I think no one could find a person who's feelings and emotions are the same as himself. So everything can't be objective for me.
ReplyDeleteI think it is not possible for anything to be objective but sometimes it can be objective. I think this question is confusing because you can prove something that is objective but at the same time you can reflect your own emotions and thoughts about that thing. It is possible to be completely objective but then you can't show your own opinions and thoughts. I think everyone should reflect their own opinions and thoughts. For example, 2+2=4 should be objective for everyone but as I said some of the people can think that it should'nt be objective for themselves. But at the same time we can prove it by methods. So I think this is very confusing.
ReplyDeleteI think everything cant be objective.Like maths or science. As my friend Mert said everyone knows 2+2=4 its never changes.Actualy arguing starts at personal feelings.Feelings can change person to person but there is one thing its never change about this.Everybody has feelings. But as said so its changes person to person. Its realy confusing.

ReplyDeleteobjectivity. I think nothing is really objective. Lets think about math. Even now the professors thinks that '2 plus 2 may be equal to five'. This is a huge problem because we all thought that math is something objective. This is almost same as for everything. Lets think about history. How could we 100% sure about what happened, what REALLY happened. I am just saying that nothing is really objective. Even math, history , language none of us could prove what is really correct.
ReplyDeleteI think everything can not be objective. Objectivity is something that there is no feelings, emotions and personal opinions in it. Objectivity is something that everyone is thinking the samething and everyone can prove it. For example 1+1=2 is a maths problem that is objective. There is nothing to discuss in that problem. But there are some ideas that eveyone think differently. This is so normal because everyone’s ideas can not be same. For example ı say pizza is better than hamburger but one of my friend say hamburger is better and another of my friend can say pasta is better than two of them. We call this subjectivity. In subjectivity there are feelings, opinions , emotions. We can’t prove it.
ReplyDeleteI think that everything cant be objective because there are too much thing that is subjective too. The best example would be our lifestyles! Everyone likes diffrent things and no one can prove that their lifestyle is the best way to live. Secondly, if you want to think about objectivity than as everyone said : Maths! Maths is something that is objective. It's objective because everyone learns the same and knows the same. So you cant say that everything can be objective. For now.
ReplyDeleteI thınk yes everything can be objectıve. Well, ıf you can prove it by the other objective things. This is complicated because everything that we know came from someones mind so the facts that we know were subjective ı thınk but they are accually facts and the facts are objective because we can prove them so ı thınk everything was subjective but with some proofs they became objective so yes everythıng is subjective ı thınk
ReplyDeleteI think that things can not be totally objective and there is no objectivitiy. I realized this in class. If there is a posibility that we might be in a dream right now and everything that we know might be a lie, then there is no truth and we can't talk about objectivity. If we think about that we are now laughing at the facts that people used to think that they are objective, then why might not this happen to us. Maybe they are going to laugh at the facts in future that we think that are scientific now.
