Theory of Knowledge Response: To what extent does the media shape your perception and understanding of world events and crises?
Unfortunately, there are a lot of unpleasant things going on in the world today. However, did you ever stop to think about how the media shapes what we know about the world? For example, in the US, the media really makes all Muslims to appear dangerous. Why do you think that is? What about other cultures and people? How do we perceive them? Also, how much in the media is meant to manipulate our views? Who is doing the manipulation and why? Fun stuff!!!

I think the best way to express something is using press and media. Everyday millions of people watching and following the news. We can find news in everywhere. In our telephones, televisions, computers, newspapers. So ı am trying to tell you that people affected by what they see in the media. If media say something negative about a person or a situation, than people also think negative about that person or situation. Media is affecting our lives. Media has a lot of power. Media also help us what is happening around the world. But sometimes they can change the news then tell to us. So ı think that media controls our brains and change our ideas.
ReplyDeleteHow much the media affect our knowledge to other cultures? It is a hard and subjective question. It can change person to person. For me media is a virus that controls our brain. For example: We all know the super exciting hollywood films. They are super cool, there are a lot of actions, handsome mens and stuff like that. They want us to think that their country is the best in the world. There is a film called Saving Private Ryan. In this film the american army is sooo strong. They have machine guns, planes, ships. Also in the newspapers I learned that the money that US spends to their army is two times as the whole countries spend to their army conbined. They want to show that they are strong. Also do not forget that media can be so cruel. As you know terror happens usually in muslim countries and Turkey is a muslim country but Turkey doesnt do terrorism. Americans show turks very dangerous just because their religion. Thats how media can be cruel. So my advise is dont allow the media to control your mind because they can limit our knowledge to the world
ReplyDeleteThe media is so powerful that it can change the feelings, emotions and perspective of people. İs it legal? This is the first question that comes to my mind when I hear the media manipulates us. Well i am pretty sure that it is not legal but goverment -especilally US goverment- seems to agree with media to manipulate us. Why? Why are they doing this? The answer is easy: They want us to belive that their country is the best and all the other countries are horribly worse. The main reason is: Money. Money is like the ruler of the whole world. People can lie,tortue,kill even die for money. It is ridiculous that humans treats a green paper as their god. For me money is not important than our lives, others lives and truth. The Turkey goverment -mostly- disagrees to put information about terrorists and bombs on the news. I bet you know why. If people learn that there is a bomb outside and that bomb will risk their lives, they wont go out. If people don't go out, the economy starts to fall. The goverments don't wants this. It sees the money important than others lives. Is it wrong or is it right? Is it right for media to manipulate us? I may have no right to say something about this topic but I believe that nothing is important than our lives.
ReplyDeleteI think world has divided to two: the ones who has the power and others... If you are someone who is the part of others, I am sorry but you are not living your life. You are living someone else's life with their ideas, their,goals, their looking, their actings. The powerful ones controls our life. They say us how to think, how to act how to look, how to sleep, how to eat. I mean everything and the worst part that is we are doing what they want us to do. But how are them doing that? How are them controlling us? Of course with the MEDİA. I am not only talking about the news right now. Yes, news also controls us but actually there are more powerful media sources . They are in the movie we watch, music we listen, book we read... I want everyone to be honest. Have you ever watch a movie or read a book and want to be like the character in that? I did. I am sure you did too. This is human nature. We want to be perfect but what is perfect? We want to look like an actor because in the movie or the book, the others think he/she looks good. And with that way they are insisting a new things to people. Because of our ego we are taking these things and implementing them. We think ıf we do not people will shut us out. This is not only personally. There are also social results. The media also shows some groups of people bad or good, to fear or to love and we are doing what they are saying. Just because there are some benefits to powerful ones. We are killing each other, shutting people... For the sum I think media is the thing which totally controls us. I mean we say that they are not controlling us because we have ability to think but we are thinking whose ideas. Are them really ours or even our ideas are theirs?

ReplyDeleteI think media shapes our perspectives about evidents.Like in Middle Asia there are lots of people beated up in the streets and no one cares about these problems because media doesnt cares and shows us.İn Paris attacks all media talked about deaths and terrorist and we all feel kinda sad for them.That example shows us that how powerfull media is
ReplyDeleteMedia is a powerful thing which can shape our minds and life. But it is also such a vulnerable thing that can controlled by governments. So it's manipulates each one of us but if we can see the difference between the truth and what media says I think we can be the only controller of our minds. Also there is a question like how they do? For example US government makes all the Muslims appear dangerous. But are the Turkish people really that dangerous? I believe not but they wanted to show all the people in that way. Why? Because politics always like a worm in media. They wanted to show their country is the best. For me it is wrong but it is the most common and easier way of learning other cultures too. Like they show Us as a heaven in Hollywood films. It is like a Disney world that you can be the person of interest everyday. But actually the real world is not like that.
ReplyDeleteWill the governments ever stop manipulating us? I believe not. I mean at least not in these competition days in the world. Because each of the government wants power to control their own people through something. And as much as that thing is media. I don't think they will ever stop unless people raise up against governments and took over media. Because media is people, for people and people made media. As a simple formula you can ruin the lego you had built before and make it better. As the media contains people there is still hope for independent true helpful media in my opinion.
According to me media is such a powerful thing that shapes our ideas. You must know the movie callled James Bond and there is a scene that took place in İstanbul. But unfortunatelly the director or the moviemakers of the movie represented İstanbul as an Arabic country because Turkey is a Muslim country ! Whereas it is a really modern city. On the other hand because of the terrorist attacks some innocent countries like Turkey or Jordan etc. seem as a bad and a dangerous counrty. Shortly, everthing doesn't seem like it is shown.
ReplyDeleteSo basically news controls our brain. When something bad happens in a country the hometown sees that as an advantage and serves this new to the people trying to manipulate them. Think about the black America. The news literally bias over killing black Americans. The government manipulated people using books, news and films. For example butler manipulated people pushing them to hate Jews. He was a great manipulator. Media will never be the truth we're searching for.
ReplyDeleteI think every country's media changes the person's idea of looking to something. We can't change this because everyone shows their feelings and emotions to something in a different way. As we talked, USA's some medias are against Muslim people. I think it is a very racist situation becausr everyone has their own religion and you shouldn't seperate religions. So media can be very shape for every country and everyone can support their own media. Sometimes media can be good but sometimes it can be bad. Fashionable and technological medias are really interesting for me. But terrors and deaths in medias are very cruel and I think they should not share these bad things to medias.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion if someone who works as a writer or newspaper writer hates a religion or a race, they can post their comments to the boks or to the newspapers according to which job they are doing. Because its just like what we do in our lives, if you hate someone, you just feel like you need to share with someone and this is what happens with the media. If they hate from something, they just share that with the world and that convinces everyone about it. But I still think that the government might be on this as well. Because if people accepts someone’s opinion then I think government should kill that person because they might think in a different way and government is not going to want someone who thinks different then them and try to convince people about that idea. So because of this media is doing what government wants them to do. They probabobly knew that if they dont do what government wants they are going to get killed. To sum up, I think government wants media to post what they want but there might be some writes who disaggres and writes what they want.
ReplyDeleteMedia shows only the things that they want people to see. We can see that in the picture that I put the link below the post. That is why we read a lot of different things from different resources, so it is so inportant to read news from different country's resources or news angencies to learn the truth and shape our own idea. It is the same with history, there are a lot of rumours about what happened in the past, so what people do is to read from lots of resources and believe in our own idea that was shaped by whole of the things we learned from different places. Media is not the only fact that manipulates our minds, also films do. Films make you think it is the best country that they are showing. So I think the best way to know something is to see with your own eyes, but also we all konw that sometimes the truth is not what we see and that is the ironic part of it.

I think the media is the most important thing for people to make some feelings or knowlodge about something they really don't know about yet.Firstly, as everyone knows we can see that espically in the films Turkey is looking like a teroristt or a dangerous place that nobody wants to live.I think it is trully wrong and I think that they do not know our country very well for using for first impressions on someones mind.It happens to me sometimes also, I can get impressed by peoples feelings about someone elses and it makes me feel like what they were thinking about them.If we come to the positive statments I think some films or books can show our culture very well to know enough.But I think the most important thing about media is it only shows what people wants to see because it is the way that they can earn money. Finally, I think that we shouldn't believe things that we see in first side because as you can see it can be very wrong.

ReplyDeleteI think media really shapes our minds because people doesn't have time to go and learn everything because everyone has places to go jobs to do etc. everyone is busy so we need someone to learn and tell us everything so it is media but media may lie and media changes to story and gives us different than it really is so media lies and we must believe it. and media has a power who can control minds. for example at american films america shown as the best country who has the best army who has the best guns etc. so this is why too many people has sympathy to USA. I think media shapes our mind too much.
